Turrialba

Population 70,000 This pleasant, friendly and laid back little town, near the headwaters of the Rio Revantazon; is popular with river runners and kayakers. It is a good base for visiting the nearby archaeological monument and agricultural station.

CATIE

The acronyin CATIE stands for Centro Agronomico Tropical de Investigation y Ensefianza (Center for Tropical Agronomy Research & Education). It's the most important center of its kind in Central America, with an extensive library and research facility. Guided tours (US$10) can .be arranged in advance by calling (Ph:5566431, 556 1149). Visitors not on a tour canwalk around the grounds, which have pleasant paths and a pond that is a good place to see water birds. The center is four km east of Turrialba on the road to Limon.
