Playa Del Coco

This beach area is 35 km west of Liberia and is the most easily accessible of the Peninsula de Nicoya beaches, connected by good roads to San Jose. It is attractively set between two rocky headlands, with a small village and some nightlife. It's a popular resort for ticos in particular, and foreign travelers to a lesser extent, and it's less expensive than most other beach towns.

The beach has strong rip currents. This is the best place to scuba dive on the mainland, and there are several competitively priced outfitters. Two tank dives from a boat are typically US$65 (all gear provided), and beginners' classes are available. A bank opened in 1996 and will change cash US dollars and traveler's checks.
