Jaco

Jaco is the closest developed beach resort to San Jose and is popular and crowded by Costa Rican standards. It is 2.5 km off the coastal highway. Hotels and restaurants are scattered along the road, which parallels the three-km-long beach. Jaco has a reputation as a 'party beach,' but it is pretty sedate compared to North American party beaches like Daytona. The beaches are reasonably clean and swimming is possible, though be careful of rip currents.

Jaco is a popular surf spot with consistent waves and an annual tournament in August at Playa Hermosa, five km south of Jaco
